Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Committee

This year the DEIJ committee has been working on a few different initiatives.

First, we are working to more actively celebrate heritage, history, and pride months at Learning Prep. This first began with work towards celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, and we are now celebrating Native American Heritage Month. Our hallways are now decorated with flags, famous faces, and maps to inspire curiosity and conversation. We are incorporating educational materials that prioritize authentic voices and sources telling their own stories and histories.

Second, we are taking a developmental approach to staff training and professional development. The long-term goal is to incorporate learning standards from Learning for Justice,  a framework for anti-bias education, into our schoolwide curriculum. This framework is built around developmentally appropriate learning outcomes divided into the domains of identity, diversity, justice, and action. With all-staff trainings and within differentiated learning groups, staff members are working to build on the skills they already possess to get closer to our goals. We want LPS to be a school where all learners can feel respected for all parts of their identities, celebrate our community's diversity, recognize unjust actions and systems, and take action to make the world a more just place to live in.

More things will be coming from our committee this year, including a school climate survey in order to better understand student perspectives of our school culture.
