Bobby Britt - Social Studies Teacher

Bobby Britt - Social Studies Teacher

What do you do at LPS?

I'm one of the middle school social studies teachers, teaching classes of 5th, 6th, and 7th graders. I also run the after school Dungeons and Dragons club along with science teacher, Matt Ferrara.

Where were you before you came to LPS?

I've been working in education for 12 years now. For the last 5 years before joining LPS I was working as a history, math, and life skills teacher in residential and therapeutic programs.

Where is the best place you've traveled to and why?

I spent two summers in Ireland during college and loved every minute of it. Great history, incredibly friendly people, awesome scenery, and very interesting history. I've been wanting to go back ever since.

What is the best book you have ever read?

Some of my earliest memories are of my Dad reading me an illustrated copy of the Hobbit when I was very little. It's still my favorite book today and I read it at least once a year.

What is your favorite part of being an educator?

Seeing students take a topic, assignment, or project ideas and take them in directions I'd have never considered. Watching students bring curiosity, creativity, and problem solving to an idea or challenge I give them is just a ton of fun as a teacher, and then helping them develop and achieve those goals and ideas is just incredibly rewarding.

What's one thing you couldn't live without?

I hate to say it but probably the internet. At this point it's basically a utility.

What shows are you currently binge watching?

My wife and I love detective shows so we just rewatched all of Psych and Monk, two of our old favorites. We also love the Marvel shows and just finished Hawkeye and Moon Knight.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

Again it's very cliché, but probably my parents. They made it very clear through words and actions that when someone needs help, you help because that was the right thing to do. Even though they both have big personalities, they taught my brother and I about kindness in a million subtle ways.

Why did you get into education?

I remember my social studies and history teachers telling me I was going to be a teacher going all the way back to the 6th grade. I don't think I settled on teaching fully until my junior year of high school, though, but it's been my passion ever since. I can't see myself having any other career.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

I have never seen the first Harry Potter movie in English. My high school French teacher, who I had for 3 years, was a huge Harry Potter fan and every December she would let us watch the first movie in class in French with English subtitles. While we were watching it she'd give us each a small holiday present. She passed away soon after I graduated from high school and as a little tribute to her I have still never watched that movie in English.
