Hands on Learning

Learning Prep students have opportunities for hands-on learning, especially through our Elective class options.

Learning Prep School Horticulture

Horticulture

(Middle and High School) Classes take place in our greenhouses, classroom, and school gardens. Students gain skills and hands-on experiences in greenhouse management, landscaping, floriculture, and vegetable gardening. They learn to identify, propagate, and care for plants. Environmental awareness and sustainability are emphasized and practiced. Examples include collecting rainwater for irrigation, composting, and growing plants hydroponically. Through the collaborative Farm-to-Table program, horticulture students grow and harvest herbs and vegetables to be used by the Food Service team. Another component of the program is the LPS Spring Plant Sale, which provides a medium for students to develop skills in planning, marketing, using technology, and to practice social skills by working with customers from LPS and the community.

Childcare

(High School, Age 15+) Students have an opportunity to work in a licensed program that provides Childcare for LPS employees. Students work alongside the Childcare teachers to assist with the daily routines and tasks necessary to run a successful program. Teachers provide instruction using school-wide learning strategies to reinforce work skills and behaviors throughout the school year such as the importance of punctuality, positive social skills, teamwork, self-advocating, professionalism, timely task completion, sequencing tasks, and health & safety. If interested, students will be provided information and support to pursue future work in Childcare.

Learning Prep School Technology

Technology & Design

(Middle and High School) In this class, students will learn to apply the Design Cycle (Research, Brainstorming, Creating a Solution, and Evaluating) by using diverse technologies in the makerspace with a project-based learning approach. Students are exposed to concepts of engineering, electronics, programming, design, and robotics through cross-curricular projects and concepts of digital citizenship, social media and privacy, media curation, and 21st century skills through engaging lessons using 3D printers, laser cutters, K'NEX, Legos, and video game technologies.
