Greenhouse News - February!

I’m excited to share with you our first installment of monthly greenhouse updates!

After completing the first two terms of Horticulture, students have mastered the basics of greenhouse maintenance : propagating, seeding, transplaning, plant ID, watering, pest control, how to run a plant sale, and lots of cleaning.

This month, as we gear up for our spring plant sale, we are adding a new layer to our greenhouse knowledge by talking about plant science. Notably, we’ve looked at a few plants with unique biologies like the dionaea muscipula, or venus flytrap and the mimosa pudica, or sensitive plant, which respond to touch. Students are all growing their own mimosa which famously responds to touch by rapidly folding up its leaves.

With greenhouse maintenance and plant science under our belt, we will soon be broadening our scope by looking at sustainability, gardening, growing food, medicinal and therapeutic uses of plants, and urban farming. More updates on these topics to come!

It’s never too early to start planning this year’s garden! Enjoy the slowly lengthening days, everyone!

Cheers,

Bella
