After School ProgramsLearning Prep School offers After-School Programming Monday through Friday from September through May each year for all grade levels. On a daily basis, students have the opportunity to take part in both academically and socially enriching groups. Depending on the grade of the students, the programs available vary. However, all grade levels have the opportunity to join groups that focus on sports, creative arts, social development and academic enrichment. For example, recent after-school programs include: Girls and Boys Basketball, Guitar, Cooking, Art, Woodworking, Sewing, Drama, Garden Roots, Scrap-booking, Making Music with Garage Band, MCAS Tutoring, in Biology and Math, Creating Home Movies with Movie Maker 8, and Fitness. After-School programs are very popular with 200 participating students, and many sign up for more than one club. Students are strongly encouraged to work on their social and communication skills in all After-School Programs. Learning Prep School staff run these groups and use this time to assist students in improving their nonverbal and verbal skills in a safe learning environment. In addition to improving social and communication skills, after-school programs give students an opportunity to foster new interests and talents, while gaining self confidence. Students enrolled in after-school programming report to their program at the end of the school day. They remain in their groups engage in activities, for the 90 minute duration of the session. Often, school communities provide transportation for student's After-School Programming on the basis of need for further academic and/or social enrichment outside of the regular school day. If communities do not provide transportation or pay for programming, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to arrange transportation and submit payment for the student. Some scholarships are available from the Learning Prep School Parent Council on the basis of financial need. After-school program applications are sent home in the beginning and middle of the school year, offering the students at least two times to sign up for different groups. |
